Post Doc: Combustion, Mutliphase Modeling and Compution of IC Engines (HCCI and Diesel)
# of Openings: 1

Degree Level: PhD

Major (s): Mechanical Engineer, Aeronautics and Astronautics

Duties/Tasks:  Modeling of multiphase flow and combustion in an IC engine.  As part of a multi-institutional 4-year DOE project with a target of a in-vehicle demonstration of 25% increase in thermal efficiency while simultaneously achieving Tier II bin 2 emissions.  RANS modeling will be used for control of combustion in HCCI engines while LES methods will be used for fundamentals research.  Together with university collaborators, the candidate will be responsible for pushing numerical methods toward application of LES to simulation of HCCI and SI combustion.  Post Doc will also use commercial RANS codes to quickly provide physical insights to experimental results and advance control modeling of HCCI combustion.  Interfacing with leading university and industrial partners.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • LES and RANS, Combustion Modeling, Multiphase Flow Computation, Chemical Kinetics, Physical Modeling, Numerical Methods, Parallel Computing, Strong Background in fluid dynamics, and Thermodynamics required
  • Post Doc experience in academia is also a plus
  • Proven research track record required
  • Must display a strong degree of independence with excellent communication and team skills to work effectively in an interdisciplinary and international project team
